After getting dumped by her husband and kicked out of the family home, middle-aged Kathi Koenig (Gabriela Maria Schmeide) picks up the pieces of her life and moves back to Marzahn, the Berlin neighborhood where she was born and raised. Kathi was a hairdresser before she got married, and needing work to support herself and her sullen teenage daughter Julia (Natascha Lawiszus), she's excited to learn a position is open at a up-market hair salon. When she shows up for the interview, the proprietor flatly tells plus-size Kathi that she's not attractive enough to work there despite her experience. Deeply offended, Kathi is determined to open her own salon and succeed on her own terms; however, first she has to raise the money, and soon Kathi is tied up with a number of dubious schemes, ranging from working for a mobile hair care outfit to smuggling illegal aliens into the country.
