In 1874 rural Victoria, Australia, two newcomers arrive: Stingaree, a bandit from New South Wales, and Sir Julian Kent, a renowned London composer. Sir Julian visits at the invitation of Doris Clarkson, hoping to launch her singing career, oblivious to her lack of talent. At the Clarkson estate, "Sir Julian" is enchanted by a beautiful voice, but it belongs to Hilda Bouverie, the housekeeper, not Mrs. Clarkson. Unbeknownst to all, the man they think is Sir Julian is actually Stingaree, who has kidnapped the real composer to assume his identity and rob the Clarksons. Captivated by Hilda's voice and her persona, Stingaree falls in love, risking his freedom to support her dream of becoming a famous singer.
