While way too early to be a Christmas movie (the thing'll be out of theatres before December), Elf is absolutely hilarious for the first 3/4 or so, and then descends into sappy boredom in the last 20 minutes. The concept is so fresh and zany that the movie almost writes itself. The North Pole scenes remind me of those old Frosty The Snowman and Rudolph shows from the 50s or 60s. Will Ferrell is perfect as the innocent, wide-eyed, lovable goof, and plays well off James Caan's gruff character. I was, however, struggling to keep my eyes open near the end, and couldn't help but think they could have come up with a better ending sequence for the film. Still, it's better than Scary Movie 3, and would probably disappoint a lot less people than The Matrix Revolutions. Check it out.
