Here comes the latest movie to be snatched from the ever-dwindling supply of comic books (or, sorry, in this case, a "graphic novel", HA!) This one is like X-Men meets a shelf full of Penguin Classics. They spend the first half of the movie just introducing the characters and their abilities, in a very contrived yet clumsy fashion, then the second half, they go about their little adventure, in a story that really makes little sense. It's almost a what-if of what would happen if we took all these famous literary characters and shoved them in a story somewhere. We get The Invisible Man, Captain Nemo, Dr. Jeckyl, Tom Sawyer, etc etc. All we're missing to make the party complete is Oliver Twist and Emma Woodhouse! The effects aren't bad, a little computery, but I still say Mr. Hyde looks a heck of a lot more realistic than the freakin' Hulk did. And as for Sean Connery? I spent most of the movie wondering how I would react if I heard that he croaked. Here's a movie idea, in the tradition of LXG: Get Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan together, and make them fight to the death, it would be called "James Bond Survivor" and it would be better than this mess. Still, oddly entertaining.
