Aside from the ridiculously stupid story and the boring and far too skinny Lara Flynn Boyle's lame excuse for a movie villain, it was actually somewhat enjoyable. Actually, the middle third of the movie was somewhat enjoyable. The first 20 to 30 minutes, basically before Tommy Lee Jones comes into it, are dull and irritating. The last 20 minutes or so gets a bit out of hand and leaves us with an undigestable ending. Boyle's Merleena is NO replacement for Vincent D'Onofrio's stumbling, lurching "Bug." There is some great imagination in the alien department however: the locker at the train station is classic, the Balchinian (you'll find the humour in that name when you see the movie) , Michael Jackson and the guy in the copy machine all struck me as funny. It's a popcorn movie, for want of a better term (what's that supposed to mean anyway: I ate a large popcorn and a box of Glosette raisins during Saving Private Ryan) The story is not really important, despite the fact that it royally sucks. What are important in this series are the special effects, the wacky aliens and the back-and-forth between Smith and Jones. And you get it all. I'm giving it a 7, but it's a generous 7. Really deserves a 6, but that Balchinian thing cracks me up even two days later.
