Here's how it goes. First third of the movie: boring... ZZZZZzzzzzz... Second third: great; very interesting and has a good mix of drama, violence and comedy, along with some interesting plot developments; this is the half hour of the movie you paid to see... Final third: spiral into mediocrity; the movie gets bogged down in unnecessary and uninteresting plot twists that take away from the fun of the flick. Let me sum it up with numbers: starts at a 6, moves onto an 8 and ends with a 5. The actors: Well, I paid to see this movie because of John Malkovich, but I frankly found him to be a bit too hammy here. Sure, he's a great overactor, as movies like Con-Air, In The Line Of Fire and Being John Malkovich can attest to, but I just didn't buy him as a Mafia underboss, I don't know, it just didn't work for me. Dennis Hopper was in it so little, you have to wonder why they even bothered. The best performances came from Barry Pepper, Seth Green and Tom Noonan, who played a delightfully corrupt sheriff. I understand this movie has been sitting on some Hollywood shelf for the last year and a half or so. Now that Vin Diesel's a huge star, they decide to bring it out, trying to cash in on his name. Well, considering it managed to land in 9th place on its opening weekend, it's kind of fun to imagine where it would have ended up if Fast and the Furious or XXX had never been made: 14th? 29th? Maybe New Line should have left Knockaround Guys knocking around the back room for good.
