I wouldn't call it a pleasant surprise, because I actually thought this would be pretty good, just a pleasant movie. Not as good as any of the other X-Men movies, but still a lot of fun, with great action, a pretty good origin story, stunning locales, and a whole pile of cool mutants. This is a summer action blockbuster, not an Oscar nominee. It delivers as such, when many in this day and age, simply do not (ie. Hancock, Incredible Hulk) It's not The Dark Knight, but at least it is honest in its role as a comic book superhero movie, and not littered with pretentious sociological drivel that really makes no sense.
