I figured out what I like about M Night's movies: they feel like student films, every one of them seems like the first film of a promising new director. They're rough, seemingly low-budget and imperfect in almost every way, but that's part of the appeal. It seems like he's trying to avoid big scenes and the need for effects, but keeps his concepts large. The Happening definitely has its flaws, namely the acting and some concept problems, but it was entertaining from start to finish. How easily this movie could have been just another ho-hum disaster flick with tons of CGI and over-the-top scenes. Like all M Night Shymalan's movies (except Lady In The Water, which sucked), this was quite good. I hope he keeps making movies; I hope they keep letting him.
