«Truth is cool but unattainable... the truth is totally amazing, but you can't ever reach it. » Y tu mama tambien could be sold as a teen comedy quite easily. The main characters, Julio and Tenoch, are two horny teenagers who smoke grass. They fart on each other, they talk about sex all the time and dont understand crap about life, plus there are some funny dialogues. Like I said, it could be sold as a teen comedy, but when Luisa, an older women, comes between them, things change and Y tu mama tambien becomes a deeper drama about friendship, young men discovering their sexuality, growing up and becoming adults, but also learning about life. Y tu mama tambien is also about the class differences in Mexico, the richer and the poorer, its about having the chance to witness another culture for a little while - if you arent Mexican, of course. Alfonso Cuaron shoots his film with long takes giving a realistic feel but also trying to stay away, just like he was an observer. For that reason it starts out slow but quickly enough, we come to care for the characters and the story becomes very engaging. The performances are very fine, Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal really do look like they have been best friends forever. Maribel Verdu is pretty great as well, as the not-so-older woman who will teach those boys about life and sex. The film is very honest in the way they depict that sexuality, its palpable but never exploitive. It actually quite refreshing to see a film dealing with sex as something normal, without having to be an erotic thriller or a teen sex comedy. I found the final scene totally heartbreaking, cause at that point we know the characters and got to understand where they came from through their conversations but also a God-like narrator who tells us thin bits of information about them or about a character we see just for one split second and ultimately bringing more depth to the film. A great piece of filmmaking.
