No redeeming qualities in this film. I can not recall a more annoying movie and regret not having walked out.

I never walk out on movies, but after an hour of this movie, which consisted of little more than an annoying aural barrage of camels braying, wind-howling, and the high-pitched screeches/singing of small children, with next to zero plot or character development, aside from the casual sexism and/or brutality of the male characters I'd had enough. It didn't even look nice. Truly pointless.

Some may find this movie slow as it has none of the standard hooks... the movie succeeds in transplanting us in to a very different landscape and culture in remote Kazhastan, as well letting unfold the story of a young man come to terms with a deep aspiration to become a herder, despite immense forces working against him... there a few scenes too of admirable wit... a wonderful example of social realism.

A comedy? Save your time and money: get a glass full of dust and have a good gargle. The life of shepherds in a Yurt on the Kaszakh steppes is about as far removed from comedy as one can imagine. The most exciting moment in this ode to doldrum is when a new born lamb is yanked into life. It takes a long time to get there and the frontier antics of the hard scrabble players are no compensation. I admire the grim resolve it takes to survive such a life but found the film's pretension shallow and discordant. The only respite is the family's children. Their play is universal and redeeming.

Expected to see something good, but what a total waste of time and money.

The movie is very slow, there isn't any complicated plot, more like a character exploration. Well, I sort of could see how it would end from at least the middle of the movie. The landscapes captured are extraordinary and you ask yourself what you would do if you were ever so unlucky to be in the position of the characters in the movie.

Touchy with a lifestyle rarely seen by outsiders. Acting by obviously ordinary people in the harsh steppes is the real plus.
