Between writing the superb screenplays for Chicago and Dreamgirls, and directing the latter, Bill Condon has played a major role in reviving the modern movie musical. Dreamgirls is visually gorgeous. Its brilliant costumes and art design successfully capture the various eras that it depicts. Those who lived through them will have a distinct sense of nostalgia and those who didnt will get an accurate feel for the times. Songs are plentiful and keep your toes tapping throughout. The feast of sight and sound is backed up by a solid story that thoughtfully examines the conflict between artistic expression and the lust for wealth and power. The cast is uniformly impressive and deserving of credit. Eddie Murphy is at his best, masterfully portraying the many sides of his multifaceted character. His singing is terrific. Jennifer Hudson is a true phenomenon in her debut role. Not only are her acting and singing talents amazing, but also the widespread and passionate affection that she has received from the audience is a notable moment for the film history books.
