Intersting movie but a little bit long and confusing at some points.

This is not a movie for people who don't like to use their brains while watching. Confusing and long, primarily due to various sub-plots that are going on. The only thing that justifies these sub-plots is their contribution to the development of Matt Daemon's character--the only part of the film that was successful. Although very confusing at the beginning, at the end of the film the peaces do come together; however, the main plot could be more innovative and needs a twist. Despite these major problems though, you do get the general idea of the film once you finish watching it. Overall, not a bad movie, only because of Matt Daemon's character and the general idea behind the film.

Deep slow insight into the type of personality that would be required of the secret service in the United States. A brilliant movie studying the psychological ramifications of a distant (necessarily so) of the first mythcal director of the CIA. Don't look for a fast car and blazing guns type of movie. Watch carefully or you'll miss something!

A cinematic stylish masterpiece, with one of the most thoughtful stories of all time. It may be boring to some, but I found it very good and interesting. Its 06's finest.

Certainly not a fast movie - but if you slow down your pulse, take your time and have a bottle of red wine within reach while watching it, it will draw you in completely. Wonderfully narrated by De Niro.

You either love it or you hate it. This film is great but you REALLY have to have the patience to watch it. The start is a little slow but after that it keeps you interested. Also, it's important to pay attention to the dates seeing as it jumps from the past to the present to the future. Very intriguing and a nice ending twist. I think one should watch and create his/her own opinion seeing as the film is controversial. The people who desperately need action 24/7 are most likely going to find it boring.

I didn't make it through the movie! I fell asleep an hour and a half in. From what I saw it was very long & very slow. Matt Damon was boring (I usually really like him) It is one of those movies were they continuously flip back and forth in time. This made it difficult to keep track of, especially since Matt Damon did not get any older or younger looking. I really cannot recommend this movie to anyone. The friend I saw it with said he wished he could have slept through it!

This movie was an interesting experience from a cinematic perspective. It is without exception well-acted. Each of the scenes are well-shot; dark, stylish and Cool. There is a pervasive sense of duplicity and intrigue. But at points during the film, when one steps back, one realizes that there is so little actually happening. There is nothing really substantial about the plot, despite its heady subject matter. Worth seeing, but like a souffle, don't be surprised if you are feeling unsatisfied at the end.

Robert DeNiro's at the directing helm again. This movie brings new meaning to the word LONG. My wife passed out but survived through ½ of it. I made it to the end but what end? This movie is obviously for Americans as it shows the CIA in a light that is controversial. Means nothing to anyone else out there. Good lighting, good acting, long drawn out story.

It depends on what u like in a movie, but this one is for those who have an eye on politics and history. It is a thinker, and not for action junkies, who have the endurance of a 3 yr old in a candy store. Good insight into the sacrifices made those in the secret service... much more realistic than a Bond film. However, a bond film is fun too, if you do not want to be intellectually challenged.

This is no James Bond flick and what a relief. Very believable in its portrayal of the comprises CIA agents have to make for their Job and the U. S. Very much a thinker, so pay close attention to all those little details or you will get lost easily. In no way a history of the founding of the CIA. That is really a side subject. Very nicely done by all the actors.

Let me start off by saying that 2 people in the theatre were SNORING throughout the movie!! Then there was the other half of the theatre that was silently sleeping (including myself) It was way too long, boring, and uneventful. I really had no clue what was going on. Don't waste your time on this one!!

This movie was supposed to show us how the CIA began - it did in 3hrs, a simple 1/2hr documentary would've done the same. *BORING* WARNING - Do not go see the latest showing, you WILL fall asleep.

I love long stories, but this one was Sooo long and Sooo boring! I actually thought the story was gonna go somewhere when they started talking about Skull & Bones... But no, and the intrigue? Who cares? Sorry to whoever normally likes Matt Damon but in this one, he was Sooo boring and come on, are we really supposed to believe that he has aged twenty somewhat years during the course of this movie? BIG disappointment from (ounce) favorite actor turn director Robert Deniro. Not good even if you don't pay... Better off going to buy a book about the CIA or look at documentaries from Alex Jones... MUCH MORE insightful... !

This is one of the most underrated and misunderstood movie I have ever seen on this site. I guess marketing is partly responsible for this. If you are expecting to see the history of CIA, you will be disappointed. If you are expecting to see an action or a thriller movie, you will also be disappointed. This is the fictive story of a man. -- The Good Shepherd is a character study of a spy in the Cold War. The movie is centered on the main character, his evolution, the paranoia he has to live with and the sacrifices he has to do. If Matt Damon seems to always have a poker face, which is adequate, you often feel his internal battle to find the right choices. -- Yes Matt Damon do not aged adequately, but it doesn't really change the movie. Personally I found it excellent and extremely well done.

Notice that in the reviews only old people rate this movie over 6. The theme sounds like exciting but really it's a boring point of view of these events. The director gave us what we are used to in these kind of spy movies, only that in a boring sleepy cheap way. Trying to make it look intelligent making it appear complicated when really is just complicated cause is hard to pay attention during all the movie, cause honestly... is just boooring!!! I guess some old fellas would like it more since they dont enjoy the new spies movies with real action and some drama involved. This movie could be a drama from the point of view that uve lost 11 dollars and almost 3 hours of your precious life that arent coming back. The only one thing worth here is Angelina Jolie, she had her usual attitude that wakes u up at the movie. I was fallin sleep in the entire movie, just woke me up whenever she appeared because she brought the emotions into the movie (15 minutes in total), and I liked the scene at the initiation (3 minutes)

The acting and the movie itself wasn't bad, but the way it was cut made it very difficult to follow, especially since it was so long. I can imagine this is a movie that's better to watch at home where you can pause it, take a few minutes break, and dive back into and give it your undivided attention. Worth seeing, but perhaps with a pause button.

Very long collection of disjointed events with a mild sense of some theme. Drama is overplayed. Actors appear to be relying on their other more favored roles. The overall meaning was so well hidden that no one could find it, although you can always profess to have discover whatever you imagine. Best part- when the movie was so long that I was able to get a free refill on my popcorn.

This movie is great for insomniacs. I got about a 30 min. Nap. Much too long and insulting to my intelligence. If anyone thought that Matt Damon's son could actually marry and african American in the sixties and join the CIA it's ludicrous. Robert de Niro should stick to acting and forget about directing.

If this is a 'thinking person's movie' as I read in one review then I must be a totally un-thinking person! I found the movie boring and couldn't make what it was about. When my sister had to leave in the middle of the movie it didn't take me an instant to decide to leave with her. I didn't have the least curiosity to find out how it would end.

Caution, this movie is not about the Cold War! It touches on it, but the real topic of the movie is simply a study of the more or less wasted life of the protagonist. This is quite interesting to watch and well done by Matt Damon. However, it's not what I came to see and it is, in the long run, quite foreseeable. This movie was promoted as showing the beginning of the CIA, but - as I said - it doesn't really do it. The excellent cast luckily makes up for it.

An incredible film! This is the kind of thoughtful, adult film that Hollywood normally doesn't make. It only skims the surface of the CIA's evil activities. There were no car crashes and few machine guns blazing and as we left a teen age audience member said," that sucked.".

This is a movie about the decisions we make, the people we trust, and the people that we betray. Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is human, thus he makes some poor decisions. He trusts no one and is betrayed by everyone, and betrays everyone. As in real life, minor betrayals can have the same consequences as major betrayals - or perhaps there is no such thing as "minor" or "major" when we are discussing betrayal. This movie is NOT a history of the CIA. The Bay of Pigs invasion failed because JFK failed to deliver the USAF air support that he had promised, not because the location of the invasion was betrayed. The movie follows the general outline of the evolution of the CIA, and it revolves around actual events, but the characters are all composites or stand-ins for the actual historical figures. For example, there was no Bill Sullivan - Robert de Niro's character is based upon William Donovan. Bill Hurt's character - Philip Allen, is a stand in for Allen Dulles who was Director at the time of the Bay of Pigs, plus snippets of other directors."Mayan Coffee" is a stand in for "United Fruit". The star studded cast turns in great performances all round. Matt and Angelina don't age very convincingly - poor make up or star vanity? In fact, none of the stars age very much over a 20+ year span. Go see it.

It's a thinking movie and very interesting historically. It's not a traditionally mindless hollywood flick full of action and sex - it is definitely geared towards the over 18 mature demographic. It doesn't surprise me that it's getting a poor overall rating b/c of this. Angelina deserves a nomination for her role.
