User's review

It is incredibly brave to make a film about very recent historic events where the central characters are famous people who are still in power. In showing such courage, as well as conviction and clarity of vision, Stephen Frears has created a masterpiece. Even for those whose sympathies lie with Princess Diana, Frears manages to rouse great understanding and feeling for the queen and the other members of the royal family in this compassionate, enlightening, and fascinating drama. The story is told with intelligence, elegance, restraint and nuance. Helen Mirren, one of the best actresses of all time, gives what is perhaps her best performance. She can reveal the most telling details about the queen with the most subtle of gestures. Michael Sheen as Tony Blair is also remarkable. Besides the two leads, the acting overall is superb. An instant classic.
