Very moving. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys looking into a window into a different part of the world. You really feel the pain of the characters, which is rare in film anymore.

You would not dare make a movie like this about islamic women you hypocrites, because that would cost you your life... since india was the only country where anti-hindus could even stand in front of a temple and curse at our gods and not be harmed you people are bothered that that is slowly changing, but remember this was not her first anti indian movie and she was never treathened for the other ons she made.

Perfect ending. I've seen the whole Fire, Earth, Water trilogy now. And this is a beautiful movie. Seema Biswas was fantastic, as was the little girl who played Chuiya. Some of the shots are just pure poetry.

Beautifully and sacredly portrayed. A revelation about the mistreatment of widows in India. A story about the innocence, dignity and grace one can still hold even if rejected and mistreated by society. A honour to watch.

The film deals with an important theme/message, and is nicely shot. But, I sure had trouble getting into it. The weak performance of the young lead actress destroyed the picture for me; especially in a year which had such brilliant performances from other children (Pan's Labyrinth, Little Miss Sunshine, Tideland, etc. ) The young widow in this movie seemed happy or perky all the time. By the end of the flick, I was wanting to go live in one of those fun widow complexes. And, I really resent the whole Ghandi scene. How, and why, did that just appear in the movie. I could understand his appearance if he ended up being responsible for changing all the horrific practices from the past. But, as the filmakers point out, nothing has changed. So... a saviour appears in the film's climax, and doesn't save anyone/anything. I give the film a 10 for its message... but, a 3 for its execution.

Great movie, I saw a director interview on a local network the other night, it was really cool. From what I've heard on tv and whatnot, India has progressed alot it certain aspects; the strict varnas and the treatment of widows since the time in which the movie was filmed.

Religion is the drug to make people suffer for sake of others, or selected groups... And development of free mind requires more than education, but completely safe environment. So sad to know that it will be hard to have those conditions even soon...

Profound and powerful, this haunting movie will stay with the viewer for a long time. The acting is remarkable. While the story is painful to watch and to realize it is based on a reality, it is also full of redemption and hope. Highly, highly recommended. Will recommend unconditionally.

Sensitive portrayal of women widowed as children and their rejection by society, a problem continuing in contemporary India. Resistence to change, despite Gandhi and laws, is emblematic of the difficulties in alterating patriarchal privilege.

This movie shocked me... I felt like joining some women's right group and help all the little girls (widows) going thru this... I don't remember a movie affecting me in such a way. Unforgettable, I highly recommend viewing it. Thanks Deepa Mehta for this moving film. [...]

Very beautifully filmed. A tragic tale of epic importance, with a Romeo/Juliet element, "Water" exposes the miserable lives of some widows in some parts of India, and the depths to which they are driven. The child actress around whom the story plays out is a joy, and the mature, thoughtful actress who plays Shakuntala is magnificent. Together they provide the dawn of hope at the end.

I didn't realized how Indian culture are so similar to the Arab. I know of the misfortune of being born female; not only in India, but parts of Africa and other nation where Man dominates and oppresses Woman. It usually results in rape, if not physical abuse or torture. We are in the year 2006 and yet many of these cultures still practice such barbaric rituals in the name of "religion", "God(s)" or other form of belief. We need more of these evidents of unjust law to educate the world of the need to set these children & women free and to find the love and happiness they deserve.

This was a beautiful film, definitely worth seeing. It depicted a very haunting tale of oppression of widows in India which still exists to this day. The little girl in the movie was adorable, your heart just broke for her. Another true to life example of religion trumping human rights. Thank you to Deepa Mehta for the fight to make this film.

The movie was well acted and beautifully directed. It was very moving and eye-opening! The facts of the traditions of the Hindu religion are very disturbing. My question is about the 34 million widows now living in India. Are they continuing to follow this tradition of bondage or are they liberated? The exploitation of mere children by marriage at such a tender age--religion or not--is not to be accepted or understood. It is probably true that "money" is at the root of this evil!

As a "Hare Krsna" who lived in Indian villages for 10 years, I cried all the way through this movie. It had a very deep impact; my husband left me with two children to raise, alone, with no money. Best movie I've ever seen. Who care for the simple dialogue? Indian villagers are uneducated, simple people.

Beautiful movie visually, very engaging intellectually. Not too heavy yet terribly serious. I was afraid it would be only depressing and sad, which it truly is in many parts, but more it is a celebration life shown through the eyes of people, particularly an amazing child, who are denied the right of basic personal happiness through no fault of their own. Also wonderful to see another country's approach to moviemaking.

Well done expose' on Hindu hangover customs that are still affecting women today. I am aware of the difficulties that the director had shooting this film in India and personally am very pleased that she did not allow this controversy to stop her filming.

This was a fantastic movie. It was touching as much as it was distrubing. I particularly loved the ending scene of the movie, which, to my taste, as built and constructed with matery. Yes, it was emotional but it dragged the viewr and augmented his/her emotions in such a delciate and gradual manner for the crescendo. LOVED IT!!

This movie tells a dark side of a culture that is taking pride in its history. Being an Indian I felt ashamed how the society treated widows. India should stop bragging about IT and clean her social/ human rights issues! Great movie. Deepa Mehta and the actress who played the youngest widow both are brilliant.

A good movie telling a story that must be told. The romance was a bit cheesy but was necessary to demonstrate the hypocrisy of the men who use these women whilst at the same time treating them as rubbish.

Great movie. Serious. Not the normal hindi movie with all the singing and dancing and stuff - not that that isn't also great to watch, but its just different in this movie. I love it. Probably my new favourite movie. It doesnt have the typical hollywood ending. Unpredictable - which is hard to find!

Saw it in ny. Great story however, there appeared gaps in the story-telling. The ladoo-loving widow's story was tear-jerking and ms. Biswas, as always steals the show. Sadly, the sri lankan (? ) locale could not make up for the lack of the banaras one which, protestors reportedly prevented from being the true location. What was shown in the film was, in my opinion pale - though most may not notice. Overall, it's a good, touching movie but having seeing "fire" and "earth", something appeared to be lacking in this one.
