User's review

Were this movie a standard action flick involving aliens and the annihilation of Earth it might have warranted an additional point, but because it attempts to interpret HG Wells' classic novella on the screen it is an even greater disappointment. No one should go into a movie expecting greatness from Tom Cruise - though in this role one would have thought his close contact with aliens might have provided greater insight for his character - or his unidimensional sidekick, Dakota Fanning; but Spielberg has, on occasion, distinguished himself. In this case, he does not. Rather than injecting life into Wells' story by virtue of the special effects he now has at his disposal, he instead sucks the life out of it, making the plot incidental an the over the top array of explosions. Read a book - avoid this film.
