Sugar follows Cliff (Andre Noble), a restless suburban teen who on the eve of his 18th birthday takes the subway downtown armed with a subway token, a skateboard and a joint. During his trip downtown Cliff meets, and is instantly attracted to, Butch (Brendan Fehr), a street hustler. He is quickly introduced to downtown living. Cliff meets extravagant characters like Stanley (Maury Chaykin), a man who enjoys "interesting activities" with young hustlers, and a pregnant drug dealer (Sarah Polley). Cliff gets a lesson in the world of drugs, boozecans, and sex.
