I grabbed this movie at the store figuring with this cast, ie. Robert Redford, it should be a pretty decent movie. The editing was poor and the story moved along at a very slow pace. On the positive side it did keep you guessing until the very end as to how it was going to play out.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] The acting was really quite good. Very good even but the story. You are left at the end... going..."yah and...".

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Ive always believed Redford selects entertaining intelligent films. Based on this assumption, I went to see the Clearing. Well, the Clearing is the exception to this rule. It cleared out the theatre, people walked out! Its long, dark, and dull and has a script that goes nowhere. The acting is solid, especially from Helen Miren but the script is so weak. The audience never discovers the reasons that explain William Dafoe kidnaping and murdering Redford. Nor are we ever to discover how Dafoe pulls off the stunt. It's revealed that the FBI assumes numerous people are behind the extrotion but we find out the character of DAFOE acts alone. This film is full of loose ends. A lame script that ultimately waste the talent of all involved. Possibly THE BOMB of the 2004 summer. It is not very suspenseful. Wait for a DVD to be released, if that ever happens. BAD BAD BAD...

It isn't an award winning film, but the performances are worth seeing. I just expected a little more to the plot.

The Clearing is NOT an action movie, therefore it can be a little slow at times. Its an "actor's" movie. Fine performances from Dafoe, Mirren and Redford. Was I glad I saw it? You betcha ya, save this movie for a Tuesday.

The actors were great but the ending was very disapointing. There was not enough action involved. The most disapointing is the typical lack of common sense used by the character played by Robert Redford. The reason for the 6/10, the moral of the story was very touching.

I love Robert Redford, but this film has to be one of the worst ones I have ever seen. I am surprised he elected to direct it as such, with the many holes it contains.

Disappointing. True the acting was terrific and the story had an interesting twist, but too many holes in the movie to make it believable.

An excellent film. Very well directed Terrific performances by Mirren and Dafoe! Nice to see a film that relies on acting instead of violence and things blowing up. Go see it!

This is a quiet thoughtful film. Remember that the story unfolds slowly so don't expect a lot of action. Allow yourself to enjoy the acting performances and the message behind the film which is worthwhile.

That 6/10 is entirely due to the good performance of the actors. The movie itself is absolutely boring, the story is interesting at the begining which lead you to expect a very good plot, but then the story goes on and on... after 40 minutes you get bored seing the story isn't going anywhere and next thing you find out is that the movie is over and absolutely nothing has happened... It's a rental, definitely doesn't worth the money.

The story is sooo sooo SLOW and does not have any tension. The time frames do'nt work either. Poor performances.

I loved the movie. The weird thing is that it is devoid of many of the usual surprise elements and that it is somewhat predictable and sad. The film is however magnificient in that it carries you through the story making you feel as if it were real and actually happening right in front of your eyes. You feel for the characters and makes for a wonderfull movie. Robert Redford proves why he is still an actor to be recogned with.

This film turned out to be a lot better than I expected and proves than simplicity in technique can make for a good film on human nature - the good and bad in all of us. The three main actors (Redford, Dafoe and Mirren) provide strong and believeable performances. Definitely worth watching.
