User's review

If this movie was made in a year not contending with The Lord of the Rings movies it would clean up at the Oscars. I went to see it because Peter Weir is one of my favorite film directors, so this critique may be biased. The director selectively played scored music in the movie (the first battle sequence had no music) and that worked well, since I had to pay attention to the battle. It departed from the some usual swashbuckling and war at sea movies, where it focused on the plot and was not action every minute. Furthermore, I do not see many movies where the main theme of the movie is a cat and mouse pursuit between two warships. In the final confrontation Russell Crowe's use of the insect hiding on a branch to hide from opponents in trapping the enemy ship by "playing possum" was brilliant.
