Be prepared for a visceral blow to the belly by the end of this devastating fable. Young Rupert Friend is remarkable as innocent Bruno who is just on the cusp of social maturity and befriends a boy his age in a concentration camp. The rationalized brutality of David Thewlis as his father the commandant is crippling. Vera Farmiga as his mother has a heroic conscience and bears the brunt of the tragic consequences of her son's innocence. I saw it on Remembrance Day and felt a sombre sense of the sacrifice humanity must make to challenge prejudice and bigotry. It is not an easy film to watch but it plumbs the depths of degradation with the light of hope in hand that each new generation promises.
