Archetypally, a surprisingly rich feast. The great Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung once wrote a paper about sightings of space ships and UFO's as manifestations of the Self in a scientific/technical age. And this film has a fascinating representation of the Self in a sense like this, also evoking what Heinz Kohut might have envisioned: a Nuclear Self -- the ark of transition and transformation, sustaining the core of identity through a process of dissolution and renewal. And the Shadow appears abundantly too -- Lucifer-like dark messengers appear to stalk the gifted children, only to be revealed as numinous, angelic beings. (It is said that when you break the mask of Lucifer (the light bearer) the handsome prince appears) This is died in the wool, great stuff for anyone whose imagination feasts on symbolism -- and Nicholas Cage is only slightly over the top about it all. He plays his part with his usual alienated intensity: self-deprecating wit meets outsider's drive. And don't forget Armageddon. We get it all on dollops in this great film.
