A solid effort. The pacing is relentless, the plot not too contrived, the acting genuine (abundant chemistry between Crowe and the female leads) only the resolution is contrived -- one turn too many of the conspiracy screw. Helen Mirren is great as the Washington Globe's Editor, providing a steely grace that anchors many themes. Rachel McAdam holds her own with a beefy, curmudgeonly Crowe. Ben Affleck is... well, Ben Affleck: about as substantial as warm skim milk. Jeff Daniels and Robin Wright Penn are carictures. The evil corporate-defense entity is wonderfully omnipresent and sinister. The only player missing is a Dick Cheney clone.
