User's review

This is perhaps one of Woody Allen's best films I've ever seen. It's a story that exposes the viewer to the depth and complexity of the human condition through relationships. There is also an engaging and fashionable feel to this little gem. However, it's not everyday that movies of this nature are produced. The acting was what really struck me. It was far superior than I expected, and that is saying a lot from me who knows the difference from a typical good performance to that of a stellar one. In terms of the comedy, it is refreshing, delightful, as well as outright nonsensical, but anything Woody does, he can get away with it because it's what he was born to do... to make us laugh. I really did enjoy Scarlett Johansson's performance as Cristina. I thought her depiction as an adventurous young woman with wild-eyed ideas was amazing. And who could ever forget Penelope Cruz's fantastic, fiery performance as the unbalanced ex-wife. The scenes with her and Javier Bardem are extremely coarse and very amusing. Rebecca Hall's role as "Vicky" is nothing short of great. Also, this film sizzles with romance and sexiness. A few of the love scenes are quite intense. It rather stupefied me a little however, to see Johansson and Cruz in that one particular part. I definitely didn't see that one coming. As for the actual scenery in the movie, it is breathtaking. Barcelona is undoubtedly a very beautiful city. I would very much like to see more films made there. Overall, if you find you want to escape from this humdrum world for a little while, then loose yourself in this movie... it's wonderful! Hats off to you Woody.
