Children Adam and Barbara Maitland put their lives on the line to save a dog, but are tragically killed in the car accident. They pass over into the next world and find themselves the ghostly inhabitants of their former house. They soon see it invaded by an unruly and wealthy New York family who move into the property. The new family are determined to give the house a brand new urban look, much to the horror of Adam and Barbara. They decide they have to get rid of the intruders but their ghostly tricks do nothing to scare away the tough city folk. They call upon the help of a freelance human exorcist called Beetlejuice, but are his methods a little too extreme?
