Breakfast with Scot is a funny, endearing film. Its progressive message is presented with an appropriately light touch. Never preachy, it can at times be quite poignant. While it occasionally verges on farce, the weight of its more serious themes pull it back down to earth. Tom Cavanagh and Ben Shenkman play a believable, likeable gay couple who find themselves in the very unexpected position of guardians of an 11 year-old boy named Scot. As played by Noah Bernett, Scot seems a little obnoxious at first, but as he grows on his guardians, he also grows on the audience and wins us over. The couple serve as straight men to the boy's more exaggerated, comedic performance but they still share some of the best lines in the film, delivered in a dry, deadpan style. Tom Cavanagh is an adorable blend of machismo and softness, often saying so much just with his gorgeous, expressive blue eyes. Ben Shenkman is sharp and insightful, his timing always bang-on. The supporting cast help to flesh out the story and add laughs. Even the film's biggest jerk, as played by Colin Cunningham, is entertaining and a bit likeable. The film also displays some of the most clever, inventive and seamless blending of credits ever devised.
