After seeing the first one, this is incomparable. For those who haven't seen the first one, go rent it.

For those of us who watched the series of the same name, the film was a welcome follow-up and certainly didn't disappoint. City of Men is about more than two young men who have grown up in a Brazilian favela... it's about the human experience. Strong acting, beautiful cinematography, and a story that doesn't rely too heavily on flashbacks but presents just enough of a background to avoid alienating its new audience amount to a great, solid film. Those who enjoyed this film should be sure to check out the series.

Very good movie about friendship and culture in another city, country. It makes us appreciate more of our simple easy stuffs we have in our comfortable Canada. Touching and moving.

The movie invoked a spirit of regeneration in me that made me realize my own self worth by acknowledging my past experiences. Ultimately, the movie gave me here and now.

The movie puts you inside the life in a Brazilian favela, which becomes a very realistic experience. You can feel the heat, people's poverty, friendship and fear of the gang violence. Although it has a lot of gun shooting, it's neither a criminal action flic in a hollywood sense, nor is it a documentary type depressing depiction of the bleak reality. It has a very good balance between suspense and real human issues. In the end all the characters make sense how they got there. It has no flat hero or vilain characters, just normal people making choices under their circumstances, yet the struggle between the good and evil is always on the edge. The acting was very good, no deliveries of passionate "Oscar worthy" speaches or other dramatic tricks, yet the motivation and inner struggles of each character were felt and understood.

'City of God' was much better. In this one you never got attached to any of the characters. They could have all died and I couldn't have cared less. Doesn't make you want to visit Rio. Although I usually don’t care about subtitles, the trailer wasn't clear on the subject. All in all, not a bad movie but not a good one either. I give it 6½ or 7.

I thought it would be depressing -- more psychopaths, a la No Country and There will be Blood, both of which I've wanted not to see -- but in fact there is a bit of hope in these stories of mostly young people trying to do their best in a very tough situation, the slums of Rio de Janeiro.
