Definitely, Maybe has a lot going for it and a lot going on in it. It skillfully blends traditional elements of rom-coms with smart, inventive and original plot twists and complications. Not content to involve just one love interest, this film offers the hero three. Add to it the always adorable and impressive Abigail Breslin as his precocious and wise daughter. The large ensemble cast is universally strong. The charming Ryan Reynolds achieves an easy chemistry with his three leads and tender moments with Breslin. If the busy main plot is not enough, the story also traces the rise of everyday technologies like the internet, the cell phone and the iPod while wryly tying current political events to those from the recent past. With all this going on in the foreground, N. Y. C. is yet another star shining brightly in the background. The cinematography lovingly captures the city in all its magical splendour. The only quibble I have is with the ethical take on a certain crucial scene. What is portrayed as a blatant betrayal designed to reveal a character's more unlikable side can actually be debated as a complex and difficult moral dilemma with no easy answers and no clear right or wrong choice.
