This beautiful, Spanish-language thriller, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, is a welcome delight for people who love scary movies but not the torture-porn antics of today's so-called horror flicks. However, this is much more than just your typical haunted house story. Belen Rueda gives a breathtaking performance as Laura, a woman who returns to the orphanage of her youth to open a home for special needs children, only to encounter terrors unknown surrounding her young son's disappearance. The outcome is heartbreaking yet exquisite in its depiction of human suffering. The atmosphere and mood created in this film is utterly superb. We are transported deep into a world filled with sadness, fear, and indescribable beauty. The camera work, music, sound effects, and lighting really make the picture for what it is... an ultimate creep show. Also, the pacing and direction are excellent, and the film's use of foreshadowing is remarkably strong. There are a few scenes however, that keep you on the edge of your seat, but unable to look away. I actually thought my heart was going to jump into my throat during one particular episode because I was caught off guard. If you enjoy suspenseful, smart, creative movies... this is a sure bet. I highly recommend "The Orphanage" but keep in mind this film is subtitled.
