Showed some good African American history, which should make us Whites cringe. Well done and worth the watch. Not an action thriller, but a great story.

Let me start off by saying that Denzel is my favorite all-time actor BUT beside that point this is an AMAZING movie that has you laughing , crying and feeling every other emotion you can feel during a movie. Not only is this movie insprirational it is educational and one delivered by the riveting performances of the likes of Denzel Washington and Forrest Whitaker.

While we were waiting for the movie we paid for to start, we walked into this movie... and did not leave. Didn't even know this movie existed. Forrest Whittaker is amazing... he makes you forget you're in a theatre. This movie is about black oppression in the 1930's, but from a fresh perspective. Based on a true story of a fantastic teacher who is the head of the debating team at a black Texas college. Don't miss it!

Yes, Denzel does it again. But that's not news. Two of the 4 debators are new and upcoming talent... they help the two great actors (Whitaker and Washington) make this a film to remember. Great scene after scene, powerful performances by most, even though the girl in the group had trouble with her accent, her average performance could not bring down all the others. An inspirational, must see film!

An inspirational movie based on a true story demonstrates that even in the mist of fear and oppression humans come overcome and succeed. Having lived in the in the US it doesn’t feel that long ago that we were taught to call the police if we saw any black people in our neighborhood and at public places there were white only water fountains. So I find it strange to hear a comment that movies of this type are no longer relevant. Mark D.

Wow, how can you not be engaged in the intensity of Denzel and Forrest in this movie? Surely the fighting spirit of youth gets you to believe once again in the realness of dreams and that obstacles can be overcome even in the least likely of circumstances. Definitely a movie to see for those looking to believe in the impossible and to learn of the challenges that others have faced in this world.

A feel good movie and very predictable. It's nice to see Denzel in something else than a cheap action flick. Generally well acted and mostly entertaining.

Truly a masterpiece - sad how [blacks] had to suffer and be degraded in a "civilized" country and society...

It is good to see Hollywood bring in the idea to popular culture that African Americans are not just Basketball playing Rappers; It is invigorating to see that we all are influenced by good books, the strive for liberty and above all, freedom; through learning and achieving.

What matters is the remembrance of these true events in the light of the new racial targets of our times. It's a great movie. Its very moving. Denzel is getting in a routine by now, but hey, he's still bankable apparently. It's the truth being spoken in this movie that moves us more than the quality of the acting. The actors do a good job, but that was not the cause for my wet eyes.

Anyone who ho-hummed when Tolson referred to helping young debater Lowe reclaim his "righteous mind" would not be in a position to appreciate this film. The idea speaks from a tradition that goes back through Christianity into Greek philosophy, and it equates freedom, spiritual and otherwise, with disciplined thinking, making the mind that part of the human that is distinctly human (Aristotle) and thinking the task that humanity uniquely achieves -- effectively the more you discipline your mind, the more free you are. Now if you don't buy that, then this is just some movie about black kids with big mouths -- they might as well be rappers like 50 cent. You don't notice the role some of the figures played in the civil rights movement, for example. On the other hand, if the movie is about the relationship between clarity of thought and human freedom, then anyone who appreciates the relationship will appreciate the labor that the characters went through. Thus, the movie is a "Rocky" for intellectuals. The stuggle for freedom does not end with a driver's or a liquor license, or even the right to vote. It is an ongoing struggle to free one's thought. In the media environment we are in today, and in the international economic and political quagmires that America finds itself in, there are those who believe that more movies like this are necessary, to remind us that our hope and future are not determined by our BMI, but by our willingness to train and exercise our "righteous minds".

Nearly put me to sleep a couple of times. It's 'inspired' by a true story, so there were too many cookie cutter predictable points in the movie.

I was forced to see this movie. There was nothing great about it. I'm getting sick of movies with this same subject. There are too many movies about racism against black people... get over it. Other races put up with discrimination too, it would be nice to see something different for a change!

Over-the-top, violin-powered attempts at eloquence were what I remember most from this flick. I enjoyed Whitaker's performance, and the young actors had their moments - but Denzel is intolerable in this. Truly, he has to learn a new facial expression, and soon. Maybe in another mood I would have enjoyed it more. But no matter my mood, these pre-packaged Oscar-beckoning performances, as intello-witty rebellious-for-a-noble-cause men-of-steel, have taken up too much of my movie watching time.

This movies is a masterpiece. The cast is good especially the young actors and we can't forget the performance of Denzel and Whitaker both terrific... this is one is worth it and give you a loop back of the way black folks were living during 1930's...

Great cast and an even better script make this movie like ten times better than Freedom Writers or other similar movies. Both touching AND uplifting. I love how Denzel's performance is very low-key on camera but very loud and confident off-camera. Far better than Antwone Fisher as well. The one annoyance I have, and it's mostly because I used to be on a debate team, is that they are always telling the truth and arguing for the truth in these debates whereas that's rarely, if ever, a winning strategy in actual debating. It's also annoying how they always get to debate the 'right' side of the debate. Apart from that and a little too much melodrama in the last 15 minutes, it's a really great film.

I didn't know going in that this was based on a true story, and when that info flashed on the screen, I realized that the strength of the movie was "truth". Seeing the South through the eyes of these intellectual, intelligent people who faced huge obstacles because of only one thing-- their colour, was eye-opening. The framework that shaped & limited their lives despite great intelligence and abilities, was so well-told. Acting -- all of roles --were unforgettably played. At times, I found the movie, a little too obviously didactic, (maybe because this is Denzel's first directing role) but nevertheless really worth seeing. The audience applauded at the end. It was deserved.

I enjoyed it. It's a debating, Texas and disenfranchised black america version of Dead Poets Society. Actually it's better than DPS. At least fighting for human rights and debating are two things I can get behind and it _is_ based on atrue story unlike DPS. If you are over 20, I'd still recommend that you wait to see it on video.
