User's review

Don't worry about Kleenex, the odd tear is quickly surpassed by a smile in this remarkable film about the human condition under great adversity. Mathieu Almaric gives a bravura performance as Jean-Dominique Bauby, the editor of Elle who suffers a devastating stroke. The most heartfelt humour surfaces to comfort him as he faces his destiny with extraordinary grace. The most touching scene with Max Von Sydow as his father struggling to communicate is straight from Bergman, a fine counterpoint as both realize that they are trapped in their bodies. It is an uplifting treatment by Director Julian Schnabel, who presents the caregivers as dedicated, patient and competent professionals facing extraordinary challenge. This New Year I've made a resolution to celebrate the freedom and joy of the healthy body and alert mind. Jean-Do inspires gratitiude for all one takes for granted in the human condition -- especially the ability to communicate and love.
