User's review

For a film about a man who falls in love with a sex doll, Lars and the Real Girl is surprisingly wholesome and heartwarming. In fact, it has very little to do with sex at all. Its themes run quite a bit deeper. It's actually a gentle, compassionate, idealistic film about mental illness and its effect on family, friends and the entire community as they struggle to support the person who is suffering. It's also about individuality and tolerance of behaviours that we might not understand or be familiar with. Ryan Gosling's work in the title role is sympathetic and insightful. The supporting cast is impressively sensitive, naturalistic and believable.
