User's review

Like or hate boxing, stories surrounding the game often reveal remarkable insights into the human condition. This is the case with Poor Boy's Game, although it really is about much more than boxing. It's actually about confronting racial violence and finding the wisdom and courage to refuse to participate in its perpetuation. It's also about facing personal demons and learning not to give into the rage they create. Stylistically, the film has a gritty, almost-noirish feel and is reminiscent of Nicholas Ray's work. Strong performances enhance its power. Danny Glover is heartbreaking and haunting. Rossif Sutherland plays his role with subtly and nuance. There is noticeable chemistry between him and Laura Regan. Flex Alexander has a commanding screen presence and imbues his antagonistic character with charisma and sophistication.
