Until July 18, my favorite superhero movie was tied with Iron Man and Spider-Man 2. Now, just by an inch, the Dark Knight was better. Just an inch. But it was so utterly fantastic you can barely call it a superhero movie more than a crime drama. Anyway, it is about Batman, the new D. A. Harvey Dent, and Commissioner James Gordon trying to take down the Joker. If I say anymore, I will ruin the plot. About the casting: Christian Bale was not overshadowed; Batman was more violent and serious than ever. Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine were all welcome and fitting in their supporting roles. But at the end of the day, the two actors who take the cake are Aaron Eckhart, who brilliantly plays Harvey Dent, and stays consistent through a tragic character shift, and the brilliantly sadistic and iconic performance of Heath Ledger as the schizophrenic Joker. Bottom Line: Amazing, complex, and darkly humorous movie, courtesy of the Joker. Give Ledger an Oscar.
