User's review

A very engaging romantic drama that touches deep themes enigmatically. One of Ben Kingsley's best performances: he is nuanced, graceful and furtive in his passion, but unable to commit to love in the heart despite a remarkable intellectual grasp of desire. Penelope Cruz is a dish in anything, and in this film she is fulsome and beguiling. Iconic and tragic, she ages in the soul when rebuffed. Peter Scarsgaard, Patricia Clarkson and Dennis Hopper are excellent as back story, each adding a counterpoint to Kingsley's character. Director Isabel Coixet directs with subtlty a book by Philip Roth that has many masculine overtones. The result is a fine shock: we wake up in a beautifully paced romance of loss with depth and passion. We realize that finally a film for adults has arrived that inspires gratitude, reflection and a tear.
