User's review

It has been several days since I've seen Letters from Iwo Jima and it is still haunting me. The characters have a quiet yet powerful way of getting under your skin. Their personal stories are interwoven with great intelligence and sensitivity. With every little detail gleaned about each soldier, you come to care more about his fate. As in the companion piece, Flags of Our Fathers, the film takes an unflinchingly critical look at the way soldiers are used and abused at the whim of their country's leaders. Severely outnumbered by the enemy and provided with grossly inadequate weapons, technology and supplies, the men become increasingly desperate and despairing as the hopelessness of their doomed mission becomes painfully obvious. A work of astonishing humanity that is both enlightening and devastating.
