Not the worst movie I've seen but after it was done I found myself wishing I had spend the 130 minutes some other way. The ending was quite good, but not worth the preceding 2 hours of predictable and slow-moving melodrama. The characters were not particularly well developed, so I found myself sitting there wondering why I wasn't feeling anything for them when, given their predicament, I should have. A sign of poor directing, methinks. I suspect the book was much better.

Good movie and good choice of actors but is a little hard to follow at first. By the end it made perfect sense. Not appropriate for young viewers though.

A very solid movie. They are all victims. Committing this horrible mistake at 13 and having to deal with that for the rest of your life is unbearable. My sister who watched movie with me just wanted to slap that little girl and to brutalize the girl who pretended to be raped. It just shows how flawed human beings are. They are all flawed but I feel for all of them.

I loved it! The acting, directing, and filming was brilliant. The slow pace of the movie helped to set the story and develop the emotion. The genious playbacks and beautiful music kept me at the edge of my seat, curious of what would happen next.

I expected more of this movie. The beginning was very -ok... lets get going-whats going on type of beginning... Once the movie was 1/2 way through... it began to pick up. English patient was way better or even Painted Veil. This movie did not deserve academy nomination.

I was expecting so much more from this movie. There is virtually no plot flow to this movie. The acting is pretty good, but the movie has you so confused most of the time. I really was disappointed with it.

I am an Oscars fan, and I went to see this before the big night, to have an opinion about this Oscar pick. I was absolutely SURE it won't win Best Picture. The cinematography was nice, but Keira Knightley was really not up to par. She was hard to understand when she spoke and her facial expression was that of scorn, more than anything else. Besides her acting, I think she must be anorexic, she's almost transparent!! James McAvoy was stellar, on the other hand. I loved his acting, he was believable, same for the young sister, amazing acting (really worth the Oscar nod) I think it's a good movie, but I don't see why the huge hype around it... It's just another love-story, not a classic for sure.

True it was a little long... could have easily carved 1/2 hour off it. But what a moving story, how one incident can destroy countless lives and there really is no going back. A definite must see!!

For all the doubters and haters of this movie - read the amazing novel by Ian MacEwan than go see it again. Rarely does a film adaptation of a piece of literature suceed so well. I was skeptical walking into the theatre, but the film faithfully captured the tone of the book. I was slightly disappointed by the ending - it would have been nice to go back to the mansion as occurs in the novel rather than set it all as a television interview. But in the novel, the entire ending happens in Briony's mind, which is of course, harder to do on film.

Ho hum. Very piecemeal, boring, slow. Acting was okay but the storyline was confusing. War scenes looked very "staged". We could have left half-way through. As always, Keira Knightly looked lovely though.

This is a difficult movie to rate. True, the acting, cinematography, sets, costumes, etc. are all very good. Yes, the dialogue and story does draw you in, even with its rather slow pace. However, I have to ask the question," what is the point? ". There are some stories that need to be written, however horrific it may be. Perhaps it is not the movie itself that I have a problem with but with the entire storyline. If this is a non-fiction, then this story should never have been retold. If this is a fictional work, then it is just a cruel joke. Artistry is meant to inspire or provoke. This story does neither. Avoid at all costs.

The OBVIOUS winner for Best Adapted Screenplay in my opinion. If this doesn't win that category, I'll eat my shoe (or whatever the expression is) At the end of the movie, it's the first time I found myself giving full credit and respect to the screenwriter for keeping me guessing and satisfying me fully the entire length of the movie. Hats off to the shopkeep (well, that's definitely not the appropriate expression here but whatever) It's the first film I've seen in YEARS that's made me want to read the novel IMMEDIATELY after the film (the last film to do this was American Pie 3, I think) Not only is the movie breathtakingly beautiful to look at (the one continuous rolling shot at the Dunkirk beach will numb your mind), but it also packs one heck of an emotional punch. Not my favourite movie of the year, but certainly my pick for winning the Best Picture Oscar. Most definitely recommended. The only reason I can't give this a perfect rating is because the performances are TOO professional. I can't really explain it. I was just simply far more moved by the story than the performances. Especially the younger sister who I thought offered no depth to her role.

This movie was extremely well done and very powerful. The acting was quite good along with the screenplay and direction. It has a very strong chance of taking the Oscar in my opinion. The story was really quite sad, but the ending where the story is quite something.

The cinematography and sets almost outshone the acting, save for the fact it was so well-cast. It was very true to the book, albeit an extremely shortened account. The only thing that puzzled me was why I wasn't as emotionally drawn in as expected. Still good to watch. The music was also well chosen.

Undoubtedly, this is a great year for cinema. A couple of weeks ago, I saw 'There will be blood' and though that i'd just seen the next 'best picture' Oscar winner. I was wrong and now understand why ATONEMENT received that honor at the Golden Globes non-ceremony. So I once again derogate from my usual reserve and must rate this one a capital 10/10. Run to the theater to see this one, it's simply amazing.

Very thought provoking. I enjoyed the detail of the war time and the portrait of English upper class. The story required concentration and would probably not appeal to the high speed over stimulated CSI crowd. Acting was very well done and a strong story to match. Award material.

I can't understand the rave reviews this movie is getting because it sure doesn't deserve them!! What a huge disappointment this film is. I have so many complaints and I don't know where to start. First of all, Kiera Knightley is hardly understandable the way she speaks so fast and not loud and clear enough. She has too much of a tight English accent and so do some of the other actors. Second, the relationship between her and James McAvoy is so underdeveloped and hardly believable the way it's depicted. We only know they are hot for each other in one steamy scene... that's it, nothing else. How did they get to that point? Were they childhood friends, highschool sweethearts... who knows. Third, in scenes when you expect the characters to say something, they just stare blankly into space, without saying a word!! What's up with that? Typically cold, English stone faced reactions... sorry but that's exactly how they came off in my opinion. Next... what was with some of the scenes being shown twice? Was Briony a psychic who could predict was going to happen? It just didn't make any sense and confused me to no end. Next... that war scene, can someone tell me why it was so long and what was happening in it? Were the men trying to go home? Were they waiting to be dispatched to another battle? Were they trying to pass the time on the beach, what? And at the end when an elderly Briony says that McAvoy's character died in the war of septisemia, why did they show a scene of him tearing a strip off her hide (whey they were all much younger), because she was responsible for his going off to jail and war... was that a scene she wrote in her book trying to "atone" for her accusation? I just didn't get it! This is a TERRIBLE movie & I couldn't wait to get out of there. What was the point of this movie... rape? Love interrupted? War? I couldn't tell! None of those themes was developed enough. Don't even rent this movie... it's a waste of time! The acting was awful except for the scene where McAvoy is chiding Briony for having accused him and Vanessa Redgrave at the end. I wish I could get my money back!!!

Overall a mediocre movie with a powerful ending. So 4 for the movie, 9 for the ending = 6. Although the plot is not uninteresting, characters and relationships are poorly depicted. The WWII part in the middle of the movie totally grotesque and inappropriate. KK's acting is terrible, in my opinion, however the leading actor does an excellent job. Wait for the DVD.

Sorry to say, I walked out after 30 minutes. The story went nowhere, the characters were very poorly developed, and the only virtue was the glorious building in which the movie was shot (not enough to keep me in a theatre) The boding suggestion of sex with underage girls also threw me off.

Although slow to start, coupled with the fact that the advertising was not the best, I enjoyed this movie. Not a movie for anyone who likes action or comedy, were some great moments that made me laugh and a minute later, cry. This is the kind of movie that proves you need to research a movie before you see it. People need to make sure they want to see this type of movie before they lay out the cash.
