Now THIS is what I have been waiting for my whole life: a great fantasy movie. I love this kind of stuff; I read fantasy novels, but I never got around to reading Tolkien. Frankly, I'd say it was the greatest fantasy movie of all time, but it's not something everyone can enjoy. I doubt the casual movie-goer, one raised on Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts flicks, would find a whole lot of value here, but I could be wrong. The theatre resounded with applause as the credits rolled (but then again, there were some costumed nuts in the crowd). I went to see the movie with eight other people, some of whom are just your casual movie-goer and some of whom are Tolkien-worshippers (not an exaggeration). The Tolkien-worshippers walked out of there in a near-suicidal melancholy, so I don't know what to say. I loved it, and the fact that I started to doze in the last twenty minutes had nothing to do with the movie. It's just that I was tired and have a bit of a short attention span anyway (DAMN YOU, SESAME STREET!!!). So, to all those who want to see a piece of cinematic art, this is for you. To all those who worship Tolkien, you may want to book an appointment with a psychiatrist before you go. From what I hear, it doesn't stick to the book as much as we were told.
