Fairly dull and slow. Mr. Penn's performance is the one thing this film has going for it -- yet it is not worthy of paying the hefty admission price. He was better in Dead Man Walking and I AM SAM. You should wait for the arrival of this film on dvd [...]

Not as riveting as the Academy Award-winning documentary," The Times of Harvey Milk", and not as all-out "gay" as the seventies were in San Fran and NYC at the time, but a timely and vital film all the same. Hard to believe, thirty years later, and the US is still battling over the same crap. As for "stereotypes" and "likable gay characters", gimme a break. In the seventies, we weren't trying to "fit in". Emile Hirsch's performance is spot-on. And James Franco is super-yummy. What man would choose politics over that dreamboat?!

I was told that this movie would be too political and long. I found it to be neither. The casting was superb but then again, is there anything Sean Penn cannot do? This is a very interesting time in American history and a story that needs to be heard. I enjoyed the documentary style shooting which used actual footage and intertwined it with movie footage. Good job by all.

This movie is a must see... I enjoyed it so much... It brought out every possible emotion out of me. Sean Penn is a genius in this role, he should win an Oscar. Talk about a versatile actor, from an American soldier in a Thin Red Line, to a mentally challenged man in 'I am Sam' to a gay activist/politician in Milk. Do yourself a favor, go see this movie, you won't regret it.

Great acting by Sean Penn... loved the historical content and activism and it looks like we still need more with all the bigotry in this world.

A well made motion picture and an exceptional cast highlight this work of art. Although some of the scenes made me uncomfortable, it was spellbinding from the beginning. Please go see this movie or rent it. I am not an expert and nor do I pretend to be one but some say Sean Penn is worthy of an Academy Award for his portayal of Harvey Milk. All in favour, please stand up. I am standing.

Wonderful movie, everyone should see this. It made me cry and understand so much more. I'm SO glad this movie is not just about the politician, that would not have been worth it then.

This film depicts a very important time in history. A message that is quite relevant today as we face the exact same issues thirty years later - in the same state - with the same degree of controversy - the same confusion of the issues - the same discrimination and hate - the same confusion of human's misinterpretation of spiritual truth. If we can learn now what we should have learned then, we may save ourselves more years of anxiety and fear. This is a must see,

A brilliant film, I think it's step further from Brokeback Mountain, Sean Penn deserves the oscar for best actor and Gus Van Sant at least a nomination for best director. Very good acting! And had some very lines ex: Milk saying he was born from hetero-sexual parents in a hetero-sexual school in a hetero-sexual neighbourhood, so why is it that he's gay! A must see, by all standards.

I was very disappointed and found it totally misleading. The description referred to a gay politician being killed. The movie was more about gay lifestyle, with a lot more details than necessary. I really do not mind seeing such details if the movie is good (I loved Brokeback Mountain) In this case, Sean Penn was great but I did not even care that his character get shot. He was not really likeable.

Seann Penn is simply one of the best actors on the world, the movie get slow in some point but at the end it gets better. A good way to understand homosexual persons.

It is almost a nine out of ten for me! A very good cast and the script was well thought out...

Superbly acted and, sadly, terribly relevant in light of Proposition 8.

Good movie with some great acting. The director has a nice touch of getting you into the character's lives without doing any preaching or leading one to a conclusion. Highly recommended.

Not my type of movies. The comments are somehow misleading and I wasn't expecting it to be a purely gay movie.
