Did not read the books but for me as a stand alone movie it was very enjoyable from start to finish. It's basically a teen movie with a vampire theme but it was fun and didn't bore like the Harry Potter movies.

This has to be by far the lamest vampire movie I have seen, and I have seen A LOT. Not only was it boring but it was just terrible. If the actors in my opinion did not suit their roles. Don't waste your money.

If you are under 12 then go see this movie, I think you'll really like it. Otherwise don't bother. I found the story was too simple and the movie boring and predictable at times. I wish I could say that the ending is original, but there isn't one so...

Pretty decent. I don't think it was something to write home about, but entertaining nonetheless. Probably would be more interesting for 10-16 year olds.

This was a very good movie. It was what a movie should be. Magical, an escape from reality and good acting. John C. Reilly was exceptional and Ken Wannatanabe gave a strong performance as Mr. Tall. What these young readers of the book do not realize is that in order to be able to create a film as in depth for each book would require hours of film. Unfortunately the Internet Age Kids seem to lack this understanding. This was a very strong movie that blended humour and magic into a serious yet enjoyable young age film for all ages. The sequel should be just as entertaining or better.

It has almost nothing to do with the books! I mean "monkey girl"?! WTF? Where's Debby? Anyway, I thought the plot went nowhere, it was lacking something and I was very dissapointed. But I have to admit I laughed sometimes, the script was waaay too cheezy! Don't watch it if you really enjoyed the books.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
It was way off the book. The books are a lot darker and they skipped a lot of pieces of them. There were some somewhat funny moments but they missed out on a lot, like Sam Grest, RV, Debbie Hemlock, etc. They made a lot of completely unnecessary changes: after Darren's "death" Steve is not supposed to be in the the story at all, Harkat does not bite, looks different than the description in the book, and is not known as Harkat (yet) he is known as Lefty, there is no Rebbecca in the books, Darren should be 12 years old, 1/3 of the movie should take place in Mr. Crespley's hometown (which was not in the movie at all), Gavener Pearl shouldn't have been there at all, there is not supposed to be any love between Madam Truska and Mr. Crespley, Corma Limbs should be a guy, etc. All in all, I think the movie could be a lot closer to the book.

Amazing! Didn't thing John C. Reilly could have pulled it off since I've only seen him in comedies with Will Ferrel. Really not my style so I was a bit worried at first. Excellent movie.

It was only okay. The acting was pretty poor and sounded way too scripted. It's an interesting story but it's a little hard to get past the negatives and enjoy it. If someone else is paying and there's nothing else to see, this'd be an okay choice.

Really enjoyed this movie as a supernatural action film. I haven't read the books. I went with a 14 year old boy who enjoyed it too. Lots to see, fast pace, some humour. The action has a Matrix like feel from time to time. There are the archetypal henchmen and unlikely heroes. For me the time passed quickly and it is a great choice for Halloween if you don't care for slasher films. Really enjoyable.

For this genre of film I enjoyed it definitely. Is it for kids? I don't think so. I give a score of 7 because it is not a great movie but certainly good and worth to see my friends.

I found the movie to be good, however, there should of been more emphasis on the "freaks" of the cirque and Darren should of had a longer line in terms of an explanation of the reason as to why he did what he did. Not just a small phrase where it has no very little explanation and just leave it at that!

My hub and I went to see this movie and we came off very impressed. We normally go to the movies every weekend so we see a lot of films. This one was one of the years best IMO. Was a smaller advertised movie so we didn't know what to expect. Plus, we had not read the books. I can bet that the budget was not the same as Transformers 2 or Star Trek. It proves that you don't need all the budget in the world to create a very artistic well made film. The thing that I liked about the movie the most was that it keeps your imagination rolling right outside the box. Much like a book does for it's readers. A hard feat to accomplish on film. The artistic creators had a hard task to mirror the images created by the book, those creators were very special indeed! :) Everything was vivid like a dream. The night scenes were especially well done as well. The moonlight in the graveyard gave enough illumination yet kept it mysterious. There wasn't a lot of action but because it was taken from a book they had a lot of plot to catch up the audience on. Even though there was a teen romance it wasn't grossly focused on like Twilight and Harry Potter. So many films focus on this, trying to capture 1 age group and I feel this doesn't make a good film. John C. Reilly was perfect for this role, he portrayed Crepsley hard enough to make him believably 'hero'yet soft enough to make him lovable. A fine line! Everything right down to the costumes of the characters was expertly done. Reilly is not the conventional model actor playing hero that we're used to seeing but he still even can come off sexy (at times!) A must see if you're looking outside the box for once! :)

I read the books, and so I enjoyed the movie, even though I was nitpicking the changed plot points on the way home. If you haven't read the books and are planning to, I would recommend not seeing this movie until you have read them because it has some spoilers for books halfway through the series. But I thought the movie was funny, and I liked the costumes. Mr Crepsley (Reilly) was particularly entertaining. If you're thinking of seeing this, do.

It was very good! I enjoyed it till the end... which is rare nowadays with a comedy. What's not to love about Vampires anyway! John C Reilly's character's sarcastic view on life & death is hilarious! I might even check out these books now...

If I had not read the books I think that I would have been much more disappointed. I appreciate that the movie followed the first three books well and focused on characterization, something lacking in many movies based from books. That being said, it started off quite slowly and people who did not read the books may have lost interest at this point. They did embellish on bits (no Sam, much Mr Tiny, parents were much more detached, etc.) but in all I was impressed. I really hope they continue with the movies as it would be a shame if no more were created.

This was a waste of my time. The main character came off as annoying and far too boyish for this type of movie to me and the acting wasn't great. It could've flowed more smoothly through scenes and the 'action' wasn't too bad though lacking much in my point of view. Should've saved my money to see something better.

Read the book, a long time ago, which made it very nice to see. They went a little fast but they tried to fit as much of the book in clearly, and the acting was mostly good, especially from the main characters. They spent most of the money on the effects and such because those were well done.

Having read the books I found the movie definitely worth seeing, even though it was tweaked on many diffent aspects and it had a totally different ending. The first hour of the movie was definitely boring and only filled with humor, but in the movie's defence I found the first book rather boring as well. After the halfway mark though the plot definatley picked up and it kept me on the edge of my seat until the credits rolled. The character's profiles could have been a little more accuarate as well, like Darren was a bit younger in the books, and Murlough was supposed to be fat, but it was all to enhance audience appeal, which is okay for me. Mr. Tiny also got a bigger role in the movie that in the books and lefty was called Haraket even though they don't know his name until Vampire Mountain. They picked good actors, and I was delighted to see Josh Hutcherson's stunning debut as a antagonist. The effects were good and better than the last vampire movie I saw in theatres coughTwilightcough. I was dissipointed though, to see Sam Grest cut out of the movie and his place filled with a girl that was a boring two dimmensional character and was only there to add in the sappy romance factor. For a rated PG film they also swore way to much for even my liking (and I swear a lot)! Aside from certain aspects they did very well and I eagerly await the sequal.
