I was going to give this movie 1/10, but decided to throw in another point for its clever concept and quirkyness. It was dull, unintelligent and I laughed at it, not with it. If you're capable of expanding your mind to extraordinary capacity, you may find room to enjoy some of its antics. For most people (and tastes) however, the movie simply sucks!

About half way through this movie I realized that I had ceased paying attention and was starting to think about my taxes. That's how boring this movie was. I normally like light comedy and romance but quite frankly, I didn't care if they all lived or died!

Should be renamed "The Invention of a Bad Movie". If you are religious, don't see it! You won't want to hear the unfortunate truth.

Boring, predictable and safe, too bad, it is a great concept that the writers could have had a lot of fun with.

Plot line runs out of humour after 20 minutes - after that it is pretty puerile.

A different take than usual, with some cleverness that's bound to offend anyone with the slightest religious sensibilities.

Don't see this movie if: you're incapable of enjoying a slightly British sense of humour, or, you're a devout Christan. Either way this movie will either bore or insult you. However, it was perfect for myself and my group of friends. If you're willing to suspend your disbelief (after all, the events in the history of the movie wouldn't have happened if no one could ever lie), and you're in the mood for something a little more silly than serious, go for it. It was touching, at moments, and although it probably wasn't the overall intention of the movie, it made me think about the place of lying in our culture and society from several new points of view. I always enjoy movies that can make me laugh throughout the movie, and think. It doesn't happen often. Definitely give this one a go in the cheap theater if you get the chance.

What a great movie, not the usual mindless Hollywood drivel! So totally Ricky Gervais. It is intellectually witty; which will not suit the masses that's for sure, but those who get it just GET IT! In an odd sort of way it reminded me of "The Life of Brian". I think this is a movie that should be watched a second time (at home), to catch all the finer points.

If you love Ricky Gervais and his type of humour, you'll love this movie. It's really funny and Gervais proves why he is one of today's comic geniuses. Oh, and the cameos rock!

This is by far the worst movie I have seen this year. The fact that everyone had to tell the truth and the recipients had to accept what was said, was just a ruse for the writers to come up with some really insulting lines - none of which were funny. Ricky Gervais can be funny but he missed the mark in this movie. The fact that he was the writer and the Producer makes me wonder. Did he really like it post production and prior to release? This is a prime example of a talented man cashing in on his prior reputation as a stand-up comedian, and feeding the public with a piece of trash and expecting it to be liked.

Horrible - I love Ricky Gervais' comedy and have the Office and Extras on DVD. This doesn't even appear to be from the same mind. It's a weak premise that is poorly fleshed out with a critique on religion that might have been novel 200 years ago but in 2009 looks desperate. It's a shame, really.

It started off funny, then lagged in the middle, then became a romantic comedy with not-so-much comedey...

Brilliant. Not surprised some people don't get it though, it's not as shallow as the comedies we usually get.

The Invention of Lying is a must-see comedy. I was laughing at almost every part! Ricky Gervais does a fantastic job of playing the unlucky loser, and is also very VERY funny. If you are looking for a good laugh, go see this movie, it won't let you down.

Quite crude from the beginning. People walking out of the theater half way through. The "jokes" were pretty pathetic and plot VERY obvious. Don't believe the previews, all they showed were the few funny parts, the rest is crap.

I rarely read reviews but I should have. What a waste of our time, we had been hoping for some escapism by going to a movie that had actors we like and what a disappointment it was to us. They only seemed to focus on how bad it is to tell the truth, rarely did it touch upon how honesty is a good thing. I can't lie, this movie was really bad and I would not recommend it to anyone.

This could have been so much better. The first half was pretty interesting, and there was a really touching scene that was worth the price of admission. BUT, the last 45 minutes turned into more of a rom-com that seemed predictable. A good premise that was compromised...

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
I was expecting a comedy. There was nothing funny about it. Perhaps it was meant to be deep and meaningful: imagery of Christ, meaning of religion. Why would the main character even be interested, let alone be in love with someone as shallow and self-centered? My husband and I just didn't get it.

An interesting concept, but if it is to entertain a mainstream audience it is a terrible idea. It does not make couples cry about love, it does not make you ponder certain thoughts, it simply makes you mad, depressed, and ruins your night with its controversial themes.

Very clever movie; a world not just without lying but without imagination. All the art was pictures of real objects, all the films documentaries, all the relationships without emotion. But everyone wanted emotion and that is what they got when someone started to lie; they got hope and imagination. It's the first time I have seen Ricky Gervais act in a sad way and he did a great job. Lots of great cameos as well from the likes of Edward Norton.

Well, this movie was very odd. They sort of turned it into a romance, but that didn't really work as well as you wanted to because you got so sidetracked with all his death theories. However, there were some very funny parts in regards to them "not being able to lie". Imagine living in world where it wasn't even that we just didn't lie, it was like we couldn't and it wasn't a part of our reality. So we just said everything we were thinking etc. Weird. It was ok, but nothing to rave about.

I am a big Ricky Gervais fan but was totally dissapointed with this film. If the premise was that people could not tell a lie then why did they have to tell everyone what they were thinking! It made most people seem very shallow - especially Jennifer Garner's character. Was very surprised to see some big name actors with cameos. Just a terrible movie!

I like the British humour of Ricky Gervais and finding out that his Father is from London Ontario made me a bigger fan. I did enjoy the movie but it was predicatble and it makes me wonder if Ricky had to follow a formula or had restrictions placed on him. His wit and fun side certainly come through but seemed to have been reigned in. I would still recommend this film but if you don't get suttle humour and like the "Rush Hour"slap stick type of comedy this is not for you. Definitely a good DVD choice.
