The most exciting moment in this ode to doldrum is when a new born lamb is yanked into life. It takes a long time to get there and the frontier antics of the hard scrabble players are no compensation. I admire the grim resolve it takes to survive such a life but found the film's pretension shallow and discordant. The only respite is the family's children. Their play is universal and redeeming.
