With respect to the art of filmmaking, I'll say that the Europeans do it better than Hollywood nine times out of ten. This is not of those instances. The plot is so convoluted and filled with so many convenient coincidences that it becomes impossible to suspend one's disbelief. Admittedly, audiences have become more attuned to the conventions of thrillers and mysteries. They are able to effectively anticipate plot twists well in advance and figure out whodunit long before it is ultimately revealed. It's as if writer-director Guillaume Canet is feeling the pressure to up the cleverness ante by daring the audience to figure out what will happen next. This self-conscious effort at trying to be too inventive, gets in the way of telling a cohesive story. A better example of a "wrong man" thriller in which a man is unjustly implicated in the death of his wife and tries to prove his innocence while simultaneously trying to stay alive is "The Fugitive" (1993) A key reason for that film's success was Harrison Ford's sympathetic portrayal of Richard Kimble. It is very easy to root for him. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for François Cluzet's opaque portrayal of Alexandre Beck in "Tell No One". I didn't really care what happened to him, one way or another, and that is this film's ultimate undoing.
