The main message of the movie is "Don't Give Up" where Scully struggles with a dying patient who's only cure is a complicated stem cell procedure. Mulder experiences life in reverse beginning the movie with a beard, shaving it off to represent a more youthful middle stage of life, and finally ending up looking as if he's in the baby stage of life, the way Skinner held him after almost being chopped up by an axe.
